Who needs a visa to study in Germany?

If you plan study and work in Germany, it is essential to first understand if you need a visa. Citizens of the European Union, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland do not need a visa to study in the country.

For Brazilians and citizens of other countries outside the EU, a student visa is mandatory. The process should be started in advance, ideally 3 months before the planned start of the studies. Some countries have special agreements that allow you to apply for a visa upon arrival, Brazil is not among them.

Documents required for the visa

Personal documents:

  • Valid passport (valid for at least 6 months)
  • 2 recent biometric photos (3x4)
  • Completed request form in German or English
  • Detailed motivation letter
  • Updated curriculum in European format

  • Previous diplomas with apostille
  • Certificate of proficiency in German or English
  • Translated and certified transcript

Financial documents:
